I woke up today and my first thought wasn’t “It’s 9/11”. It’s so strange. It’s become a part of the landscape of American life. But this day is still one of reflection. I know we all still remember where we were. I was driving into Chicago from Gary for a temp job as a model at a big printing press conference at McCormick place. I listened on the radio. When I got in I ran straight to the attached Hilton and headed to the bar. Packed with people just staring in disbelief. I watched the towers fall and then turned to the man beside me to ask “are there still people in there?” He must have thought I was so stupid. I was pregnant with my first child at the time. Only a few weeks. I was so shocked and so scared. My brain couldn’t comprehend. I know I sounded childish but I just couldn’t process it. I stayed at work that day. They did not cancel as it was an international conference and most of the vendors didn’t care all that much. The American vendors went straight home. I ran home that evening to hug my husband and we huddled in front of the tv like everyone else for the next 3 days. Where were you?
